‘Rick and Morty’, ‘DuckTales’ Make EW’s Best TV Shows of 2017

As we start to close out the year, Entertainment Weekly has unveiled its Ten Best TV Shows of 2017, with fan favorites Rick and Morty and DuckTales making the cut at numbers 5 and 8 respectively.

  1. Glow (Netflix)
  2. Twin Peaks (Showtime)
  3. Big Little Lies (HBO)
  4. The Good Place (NBC)
  5. Rick and Morty (Cartoon Network)
  6. Insecure (HBO)
  7. The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
  8. DuckTales (Disney XD)
  9. American Crime (ABC)
  10. Mr. Robot (USA)

McDonald’s Szechuan sauce joke/incident/phenomenon aside, the publication cited Rick and Morty’s third season as a “scathing parody of superhero movies and phantasmagoric space epic blending, a memory-twisting potboiler funnier than any [episode of] Black Mirror but twice as smart.”

Disney’s star-studded reboot earned raves as the “best family comedy of the year in every sense of the word, safe for kids but surprising for adults, with the best voice cast on television bringing every member of the tumultuous Duck clan to idiosyncratic life.”

As a long-time reader of EW, it’s worth noting that animated shows have almost never been featured in the Top Ten, and for two to be featured this year is a pretty impressive feat, speaking to the quality of the material in what has become an increasingly competitive age of TV across multiple streaming platforms, cable, and network channels.

What do you think of Rick and Morty and DuckTales? Do you believe they deserve best-of status? Sound off in the comments below!
