This fall, U.S. fans of Studio Ghibli will be able to catch a Hayao Miyazaki film on the big screen that has never before been theatrically released nationwide. The Castle of Cagliostro (also known as Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro) is Miyazaki’s 1979 theatrical debut film, and it will be gracing our screens at select theaters on September 14 and September 19, courtesy of Fathom Events. The screening coincides with the 50th anniversary of the anime “Lupin the Third” series upon which the film is based.

The movie follows master thief Arsene Lupin III who successfully robs a casino and later finds out the money is counterfeit. Lupin and his associates travel to the tiny country of Cagliostro where the money is rumored to be located, but instead they find themselves caught up in a plot to rescue a princess named Clarisse from her forced marriage to the Count.

The Castle of Cagliostro was released theatrically in Japan in 1979 and played at festivals in the U.S. the following year. Due to a lower interest in Japanese animation at the time, the film didn’t return to U.S. screens until a limited run in 1991. This fall will be the first time the movie receives a nationwide theatrical release.

Tickets for the film can be purchased through Fathom Events starting August 18. According to the Lupin the Third website, the English dub will play on September 14, followed by the original film with English subtitles on September 19.

Are you a fan of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki? Do you think you’ll be seeing The Castle of Cagliostro this fall?
