smurfs-domestic-poster CROPPED

On April of next year, it’s out with the old and in with the new. Or in the case of Sony Pictures Animation’s upcoming reboot Smurfs: The Lost Village, it’s out with the bad jokes and cringe-worthy hijinks (animated and live-action) and in with the fully-animated fantasyscapes of Peyo’s original comic strips and a new voice cast to boot.

Anyway, today brings with it the arrival of the first teaser trailer for the movie. But before you watch, I should definitely stress the ‘teaser’ part of it: its only 45 seconds long (unless there’s an extended version that I’m not aware of), so you won’t get much of anything other than a fun little interaction with some of the forest creatures that reside within the Forbidden Forest (the film’s primary setting). Oh, and you get to hear the vocal talents of Demi Lovato, Joe Maganiello, Danny Pudi, and Jack McBrayer as Smurfette, Hefty, Brainy, and Clumsy respectively.

Check it out:

Again, not much to it. But it does just enough to sell audiences on the general idea behind the movie. This is a total reboot of the franchise, and nowhere is that better encapsulated than in the teaser’s tagline: “You think you know their world? Think again.”

The film’s official synopsis, as follows:

In this fully animated, all-new take on the Smurfs, a mysterious map sets Smurfette and her best friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting and thrilling race through the Forbidden Forest filled with magical creatures to find a mysterious lost village before the evil wizard Gargamel does. Embarking on a rollercoaster journey full of action and danger, the Smurfs are on a course that leads to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history!

Smurfs: The Lost Village is directed by Kelly Asbury from a screenplay by Stacy Harmon and Pamela Ribon, based on the characters created by Peyo. The cast features the voice talents of Demi Lovato (Smurfette), Rainn Wilson (Gargamel), Joe Maganiello (Hefty), Jack McBrayer (Clumsy), Danny Pudi (Brainy), and Mandy Patinkin as Papa Smurf.
Smurfs: The Lost Village arrives in theaters on April 7, 2017.

What do you think? Did this short teaser get you more excited for the movie?
