We got a new trailer yesterday for the upcoming Illumination film, Sing. In the trailer we meet a variety of characters focusing on Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) a koala who wants to save his theater by hosting a singing competition.

We then see a homemaker pig named Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), a gorilla named Johnny (Taron Egerton) who’s father is a gangster, a porcupine named Ash (Scarlett Johannson) and others who all want to win the contest. We naturally hear them singing a variety of songs from Bad Romance by Lady Gaga, and Stay with Me by Sam Smith.

I wasn’t very excited about Sing but I must say this trailer won me over. I like how much variety there is going to be with the music- everything from classic standards like Fly Me to the Moon to hip hop songs like The Humpty Dance. To me that will keep it from being a stale jukebox musical.

I also thought the physical comedy looked good and the animation is bright and colorful. It looks like a charming film to me. I am pleased to see a diverse group applying for the competition. It would be easy to make this all about teens trying to be famous but this hopefully digs a little deeper. I’m particularly fascinated with the Rosita character. A discouraged homemaker/mother isn’t a typical character for a family film and it could be really cool.

The ‘save the theater’ premise is kind of lame but if they do interesting stuff with it that’s fine with me.

It will almost certainly be compared to Zootopia but hopefully people can see past the animals and see that the stories are widely different- Zootopia being a mystery after all.

The voice cast certainly sounds good and overall I’m excited for the project. The trailer did its job.

What did you think of the trailer? Are you excited to see Sing?
