The BAFTAs (British Academy Film Television Awards) is, arguably, the prelude to the Oscars. It gives us a glimpse as to what animated movies are critics’ most popular choice for nominees. For the BAFTA’s 69th event, the nominees in the Best Animated Movie and Best Animated British Short category were just announced.

Best Animated Movie Nominees

Inside Out

Synopsis: After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness – conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school. [IMDB]

Shaun the Sheep Movie

Synopsis: A stop motion film about an oddball felted character who slips through floors into the past and the deepest parts of his psyche in his pursuit of self-understanding. [IMDB]

Director: Simon Cartwright

Synopsis: Glen is barely a man. In a desperate attempt to tap into his masculinity he attends a primal scream therapy session, surrounded by wailing men he cannot even make a sound. When another member of the class pushes Glen too far he finally lets something out- a miniature version of himself which does whatever it wants, regardless of the consequences. [IMDB]

Prologue

Director: Richard Williams

Synopsis: William’s (‘The Thief and the Cobbler,’ ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’) directs a hand-drawn animated movie set over 2000 years ago during the Spartan-Athenian wars. A small girl witnesses a warrior’s battle to the death.

The BAFTAs will take place on Sunday, February 14, in London.
