According to the Nerdist website, plans to give the Looney Tunes character, Speedy Gonzales, his own film have sprung up yet again. Years ago, New Line Cinema planned a Speedy Gonzales film with George Lopez set to voice the quick Mexican mouse, but that project didn’t work out.
Now, Warner Bros. is taking its shot at it. While the character has often been criticized for being an offensive or racist stereotype, the film is set to “move away from some of his problematic characteristics and flesh out Speedy as a leading character.”
The film will be produced by Dylan Sellers (Agent Cody Banks, A Cinderella Story) and Eugenio Derbez. There’s no information yet as to who will direct the film, who will write the script, whether the current voice of the character, Fred Armisen, will also voice the character in the film, or when the film will be released.
Are you excited about a Speedy Gonzales film? Who do you think should voice the character in the film? Do you think the character is generally an offensive stereotype or not? Let us know in the comments below!
