Another animated movie franchise is headed for the small screen. One whose sequel will be in theaters very soon.

Deadline recently reported that Sony Pictures Animation will team up with Canadian TV animation giant Nelvana to develop and produce a Hotel Transylvania TV series.

Locked down for an early 2017 debut, Sony Pictures TV will distribute the series in the US, while Corus Entertainment (Nelvana’s parent company) will distribute the series internationally. Rick Mischel, Colin Bohm, and Irene Weibel will executive produce on behalf of Sony Pictures Animation and Nelvana respectively.

Plot details are predictably scarce, but the series will reportedly focus on the ‘teen’ years of Mavis, Dracula’s daughter. There’s no word on whether or not the show will be 2D animated or CG animated (like its big screen counterparts).

“The hilarious characters and clever premise of Hotel Transylvania set the stage for endless story possibilities,” said Colin Bohm, VP and Head of Corus Kids. Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson also had this to say: “Audiences have embraced the world and characters of Hotel Transylvania, so we are thrilled to be partnering with Nelvana to take them on new adventures.”

For those in the know, Sony Animation’s collaboration with Nelvana shouldn’t come as a surprise. Last summer, Sony Pictures Animation (and its sibling company, Sony Pictures Imageworks) moved its central headquarters from Los Angeles to Vancouver. So it makes sense (from a geological perspective) that it would reach out to one of Canada’s largest producers of TV animation.

Hotel Transylvania joins a long list of animated films and franchises that have also gone to television. Notably, it will be the second film from Sony Pictures Animation to do so (after prepping an upcoming Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs TV Series with DHX Media).

Hotel Transylvania 2 will land in theaters on September 25.

What do you think? Are you interested in a Hotel Transylvania TV Series?
