After years of wall-to-wall rumors and numerous back-and-forth discussions that all centered around the question of “will it happen?”, we have finally received an update that could very well confirm its existence!

In a video interview with director Brad Bird (conducted by Collider), he first addressed the current status of the script and the number of ideas that he wants to use:

“Oh yeah I have pages, a bunch of pages. I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like. I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie. I’m just focusing on getting Tomorrowland out into the world and playing with the Incredibles sandbox again.”

This has (of course) led to the elephant in the room: is The Incredibles 2 his next project?

With a fair amount of confidence, Bird replied with this:

“Yeah it feels like it to me, yeah.”

In a way, this not only confirms (in a very definite manner) that The Incredibles 2 is really happening, but it may also mark Bird’s return to writing/directing animation since he made the jump into live-action with Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

Even though Pixar had formally announced The Incredibles 2 (as being in ‘development’) last Spring, the question of whether or not he would have the time to delve into it had lingered for some time.

In fact, at the same time that he was prepping up Tomorrowland, he was being courted by Lucasfilm to direct Star Wars: Episode VII. Brad eventually passed on that offer (with the director’s chair going to J.J. Abrams), as he wanted to focus on his original projects (Tomorrowland, Incredibles 2, etc).

When asked about Star Wars, Bird made it quite clear that his stance hasn’t changed, while admitting to some degree that the door might still be open (as far as a Star Wars Anthology film is concerned):

“Well Kathy and I have discussed the possibility of—I mean she’s basically saying this is a very large sandbox and other people can play in it. I was particularly attracted to the idea of picking up and—J.J. got very excited about the notion of shaping the next trilogy, and that idea was interesting to me too. But I kind of—I’m writing a sequel to The Incredibles and I can’t think too much farther beyond that. I have other things I want to do as well.”

While either project would tie him up for the next few years, it seems pretty clear that Brad is now going full speed ahead on The Incredibles 2 and remains as committed to it as ever.

As the film is still in an early development phase and not listed on Pixar’s current timetable for its future projects, it is only fair not to expect it anytime soon. As such, we will keep you updated as production moves along.

What do you think? Any thoughts on this news? Are you excited for The Incredibles 2?
