While certain projects are being put on the back-burner due to Sony Pictures Animation’s executive shake-up, others are getting fast-tracked at a quicker pace, with this recent news being a good example.

According to a press release sent out by the studio today, Sony Pictures Animation announced that Oscar-nominated director Tim Reckart will make his directorial debut with The Lamb.

Described as the “inspirational story of a young lamb who will change the world,” the film is based on an original pitch by Tim Sheridan and is being produced by DeVon Franklin through his Franklin Entertainment banner. Jenny Marchick will oversee the project for Sony Pictures Animation.

Tim Reckart first gained recognition in the animation industry for the 2012 stop-motion short film Head Over Heels, which examined a troubled marriage through a unique perspective: the husband lives on the floor while the wife lives on the ceiling. The film was the recipient of multiple accolades, including winning the first Annie Award for Best Student Film.

Like our very own Morgan Stradling, Tim hails from the state of Arizona (a native of Tuscon). After graduating from Harvard University in 2009, he studied abroad at the National Film and Television School in the UK, where he graduated in 2012 from the Directing Animation course (Head Over Heels served as his thesis project).

Commenting on the announcement, Reckart stated: “I’m thrilled to be developing The Lamb with DeVon Franklin and the team at Sony Pictures Animation, who have been so supportive of my efforts to develop a bold, creative direction for the project. THE LAMB is a powerful story with deeply felt emotions and gorgeous visuals, all coming through the humor and charm of our cast of animals. I can’t imagine a more exciting project for my animated feature debut.”

Producer DeVon Franklin added: “I’m beyond thrilled to be working with Tim to bring The Lamb to life. He’s truly one of the most talented new visionaries working in animation today and we are already blown away by his unique storytelling and the creative imprint he is bringing to this project.”

When we last reported on the film, The Lamb was said to be an all-animal take on the Christian Nativity story. The press release itself doesn’t really expand on this idea, apart from the film being focused on a young lamb.

Lastly, Sony Animation also released an official title card for The Lamb, which you can see down here:

The Lamb is currently in development for an unknown release date. You can watch Head Over Heels in its entirety on this website.

What do you think? Does this news make you look forward to The Lamb?
