Will Ferrell, Adam McKay to Produce ‘Henchmen’ by Bron Studios

Comedians Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are looking to branch off in the film world, and their talents are targeting animation.  Cinema Blend reports that the two will executive produce a new animated film called Henchmen, which is currently in development.

The film, created by Bron Studios in collaboration with Gary Sanchez Productions, is slated for release in 2016.  Writing the feature is Saturday Night Live writer Dennis McNicholas; Adam Wood is directing.

This is the second time Bron Studios has partnered with Gary Sanchez Productions.  The result of their first collaboration was Welcome to Me starring another SNL vet, Kristen Wiig.

Henchmen‘s plot revolves around “a new recruit at the ‘Union of Evil’ who is assigned to a motley crew of blue-collar workers led by fallen henchmen Hank.” Hank’s character arc follows his transformation from super-villain to superhero. 

A distributor for the film has not been found as of yet. A “trailer” was also released with this news, but is actually a short using the film’s characters called Henchmen: Ill Suited. The short debuted earlier this week at the CG conference Siggraph. Check it out below to get an idea of the look and feel of Henchmen.

The interesting part of the trailer is how unique the animation feels. Yes, you can tell it doesn’t have the biggest budget in the world, but that doesn’t matter because Hank, the janitor, is such an engaging, fun character. What really stood out was the 2D-esque special effects, which give this film an entirely different CGI esthetic than we’ve seen before. Already, these few elements have us excited to see more.
