Cartoon Network has announced that one of its most popular and successful original animated series, The Powerpuff Girls, will make a full-fledged return to TV screens in 2016.

The show, starring a trio of kindergarten crime fighters has been one of Cartoon Network’s most famous and popular franchises, earning over $2.5 billion in merchandise sales which continue today. It ran for 78 episodes during 1998 to 2005, won two Emmy awards and spawned a theatrical movie which released in 2002. It even inspired a Japanese anime and manga called Powerpuff Girls Z. Recently the series was revamped with a new CGI-based design for a TV special which aired in January.

Cartoon Network’s chief content officer Rob Sorcher said in a statement,

“The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide…We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X.”

It’s been a great week for 90s kids, with news of a new Lion King TV spinoff, a Magic School Bus reboot and a new series of Teletubbies. It remains to be seen if the new reboot will feature the beloved original designs and animation style, or if it will feature the rather polarizing new designs we recently saw. One thing’s for sure, the world will be saved before bedtime once again.

Are you looking forward to seeing the Powerpuff Girls back in action?
