The Indian film industry is the biggest in the world producing more films per year than any other country. Despite that, its animation industry is relatively young. But that doesn’t stop the industry from breaking new ground every so often.
According to Animation Magazine, India will release its first motion-capture feature film to theaters on May 9, 2014. Kochadaiiyaan: The Legend will be a Tamil film based on the exploits of an 8th century emperor of the same name. The lead character will be played by Indian superstar, Rajinikanth, who will also play two other characters in the film. He will be joined by other Hindi and Tamil film actors including Deepika Padukone, Jackie Shroff, R. Sarathkumar, Aadhi, Nassar, and Rukmini Vijayakumar. The film’s music is being done by A.R. Rahman and the director of the film is Soundarya Rajinikanth Ashwin, the daughter of the film’s lead, Rajinikanth. The Tamil trailer can be viewed below:
As a fan of Indian films, I always enjoy seeing India take steps into the animation industry, although I personally feel they’re pretty bad when it comes to character animation. The presence of motion-capture technology in this film seems to rectify the problem a bit, but it still looks many years behind its time. Nevertheless, I’m willing to give this film a chance.
