It may be that some had expected it at this point, but just so we are all in on the news: Futurama has been cancelled. This season, season 7 will be Futurama‘s final season, and it will conclude on episode 140 on September 4th.
This will be the show’s 3rd time being cancelled, initially being cancelled after season 4 while it was being broadcast by Fox, it was then revived for 2 straight to DVD films which were then broken up and used as season 5 on Comedy Central, and then they ordered another 26 episodes comprising season 6 after the success of season 5.
While I’m sure this is devastating news for hardcore fans, it comes to no real surprise to Executive Producer David X. Cohen who said:
I felt like we were already in the bonus round on these last couple of seasons, so I can’t say I was devastated by the news. It was what I had expected two years earlier. At this point I keep a suitcase by my office door so I can be cancelled at a moment’s notice.
While it may be the last season, Cohen expects it to be “our best ‘last season ever’ ever.” The last season will not only feature cartoon characters of our youth, but it will also include big voice cameos by Larry Bird, Sarah Silverman, George Takei, Adam West, Dan Castellaneta, and Burt Ward. One thing is for sure, I will be expecting an amazing box-set announcement fairly soon.
