Paperman-LogoA Facebook page has discretely surfaced for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ under-the-radar animated short, Paperman. Also revealed were the official logo and plot synopsis.

This short utilizes new techniques that seemlessly blend 3D and traditionally drawn animation. The short has been described as a “game changer” that will make motion capture look ridiculous.

The facebook page reveals a brief synopsis of the film describing it as “The story of a young man in NYC relying on his heart, imagination, a stack of papers—and a little luck—to win the girl of his dreams.”

A lengthier plotline is also given:

Introducing a groundbreaking technique that seamlessly merges computer-generated and hand-drawn animation techniques, first-time director John Kahrs takes the art of animation in a bold new direction with “Paperman.” Using a minimalist black-and-white style, the short follows the story of a lonely young man in mid-century New York City, whose destiny takes an unexpected turn after a chance meetingwith a beautiful woman on his morning commute. Convinced the girl of his dreams is gone forever, he gets a second chance when he spots her in a skyscraper window across the avenue from his office. With only his heart, imagination and a stack of papers to get her attention, his efforts are no match for what the fates have in store for him. Created by a small, innovative team working at Walt Disney Animation Studios, “Paperman” pushes the animation medium in an exciting new direction.

The short film is directed by first-time director, John Kahrs. Disney has not officially revealed a released date other than “2012”, but many are speculating that it will play before the studio’s November release, Wreck-It Ralph.

If you’d like to know more about Paperman, listen to Episode 2 of The Rotoscopers Podcast where we talk at length about the mysterious short. Rumor has it that Disney is using this short as a testhing ground so that they can use it for a feature-length animated film. What are your thoughts about Paperman?

[UPDATE] The movie poster and premiere date for the film was revealed. Click here to learn more!
