Popeye-TartakovskyCinema Blend (via Variety) is reporting that Genndy Tartakovsky is set to direct a 3D animated revival of famous cartoon sailor Popeye for Sony Pictures Animation.

The Popeye film will be produced by Avi and Ari Arad and written by Jay Scherick and David Ronn. No word yet on casting, although Robin Williams is famous for his spot-on portrayal and impersonation of the spinach-loving sailor in the 1980 film Popeye. It would be fun to see him back in the role that he played over 30 years ago.

Tartakovsky is famously known for creating and directing many Cartoon Network hits such as The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Labratory, Star Wars: Clone Wars and Samarai Jack. His career has been mainly focused on television animation, but will make his feature film directorial debut this August with Sony Pictures Aimation’s Hotel Transylvania.

No word on when production begins or a release date.

How do you feel about Tartakovsky directing the film? We’re excited! Let us know in the comments.
