One of the most iconic characters (and franchises) in video game history is headed back to the world of animated television.

Deadline reported today that a new Mega Man animated TV series will be developed as a co-production between Dentsu Entertainment USA and Man of Action Entertainment.

Man of Action will have full hands-on control over the creative direction of the series, where they will serve as the creators, writers, executive producers, and possibly showrunners.

Dentsu USA also retains the worldwide broadcasting rights and licensing rights for the series, so expectations are very high that the show will get shopped around to various potential network and cable channels in the US.

The Mega Man property has been on television before. Asides from various anime adaptations of different games, there was also a short-lived Mega Man TV series (which was also a Japanese-American co-production) that aired from 1994 to 1995.

Man of Action (consisting of Joe Casey, Joe Kelley, Duncan Rouleau, and Steven T. Seagle) are best known for being the creators of Cartoon Network’s Ben 10 and Generator Rex. They are also the original creators of Marvel’s Big Hero 6 (from whence the 2014 Disney film was inspired by). They remain a very busy group nowadays, as they are currently working on Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble for Marvel Television/Disney XD in addition to having projects set up at the newly-minted Zag Animation Studios.

“The 1990s Mega Man TV series was cool and different than other series targeted at kids during that time,” Rouleau told The Hollywood Reporter. “It featured great action, but also brought the laughs. Mega Man is a character that is even more relevant for today’s kids and we are really looking forward to creating something new that still respects the long tradition of the character.”

Mega Man is not the only video game property that’s making the leap to animation. The animated film adaptations of Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper will grace the silver screens come next year.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to Mega Man‘s return to television?
