From multiple sources including Variety, we have learned that Guillermo del Toro’s long-planned adaptation of Pinocchio, the story of a puppet desiring to be a real boy, is finally being made!

Set to debut on Netflix, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio will be a stop-motion musical film based more on Carlo Collodi’s novel than the more famous 1940 Disney film adaptation. Not much is known of the specific plot yet other than it will take place in 1930s Italy.

The film will be a collaboration with the The Jim Henson Company (The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth) and ShadowMachine (Hell and Back). Guillermo del Toro will produce the film alongside Lisa Henson (Which Witch?, Labyrinth sequel), Alex Bulkley (Hell and Back), Corey Campodonico (Hell and Back), Gary Ungar (Gothika, Modigliani), and Blanca Lista (Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day).

Guillermo del Toro will direct the film alongside Mark Gustafson and will write the film alongside Patrick McHale (Over the Garden Wall). No voice cast has been announced yet although in previous years, Guillermo del Toro had his eyes set on Daniel Radcliffe, Christopher Walken, and Tom Waits joining his dream project. While production will begin in fall 2018, no release date has been announced yet.

Are you excited for this film to finally see the light of day? How do you feel about this film debuting on Netflix? Who would you want in the voice cast? Let us know in the comments below!
