New ‘Angry Birds’ Trailer Smells Like a Rotten Egg

Columbia Pictures/Rovio released the second trailer for their new film The Angry Birds Movie and, unfortunately, the film seems like a rotten egg not worth seeing.

This new trailer gives us a little more insight into the main character, Red, and introduces us to why he is so angry. We see him being picked on by the other little birds at school because of his oversized eyebrows, being constantly overlooked by the ladies, and simply not being able to control his temper.

We’re then introduced to the main conflict of the film: the invasion of the notorious pigs. Of course, all the other birds can’t see the threat. Red is the only one who can see it. So, Red and his gang head to visit Mighty Eagle for advice. Then cue potty humor sequence.

For a film based on a popular mobile game, I wasn’t really expecting much of The Angry Birds Movie. But, especially after seeing this trailer, I’m definitely not expecting much. Much like Norm of the the Norm, it falls back on tried tropes of potty humor and the like. Since the film is meant to bring more context to the game and to explain how the epic “birds vs. pigs” rivalry happened, it seems it won’t bring anything new to the table as far as interesting characters, situations, and plot. Rather, the film is going to simply expand and rehash what we know from the game.

It’s a bit of a bummer because the first trailer seemed promising and we had high hopes for Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly’s directorial debuts. Hopefully, as the release date approaches, we’ll get more trailers that explore a little more into what makes The Angry Birds Movie unique and interesting, instead of tried and trite.

The Angry Birds Movie hits theaters May 20, 2016.
