Now for something a little different. A piece of news that somehow slipped by us, but is no less news-worthy, especially for fans of LAIKA.

Film Music Reporter broke the news back in April that Dario Marianelli will compose the score for LAIKA’s upcoming feature film Kubo and the Two Strings.

This will mark Marianelli’s second collaboration with LAIKA, following his work on last year’s The Boxtrolls. It will also call for a complete tonal and geographical shift in musical genres, as he moves from dark, Victorian-era sounds and Danny Elfman-esque compositions to colorful, vibrant Japanese soundscapes and beats. That shouldn’t be a major challenge for Marianelli, who has made the jump from period dramas like Jane Eyre and Anna Karenina to survival epics like this year’s Everest.

Kubo and the Two Strings will mark the directorial debut of LAIKA’s president and CEO Travis Knight. He will direct from a screenplay by Marc Haimes and Chris Butler, and will serve as executive producer with Arianne Sutner. The film features the voice talents of Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Ralph Fiennes, Brenda Vaccaro, and Game of Thrones‘ Art Parkinson as Kubo.

Kubo and the Two Strings will bow into theaters on August 19, 2016.

What do you think? Is Dario Marianelli the right fit for Kubo and the Two Strings?
