Of the small batch of upcoming animated movies based on video games, Ratchet & Clank is the most highly anticipated of them all. If only we had a full trailer by now….

Oh wait.

Gramercy Pictures and Rainmaker Studios dropped the first full trailer for Ratchet & Clank today. Watch it below:

All in all, everything looks solid. The good news for fans of the video games is that the movie looks and feels exactly how one would expect a Ratchet & Clank movie to look and feel. Its consistently jokey, right down to the self-aware parody of the trailer’s ‘narrator voice.’ It’s a bit hit and miss, but it definitely nails the tone of the games.

The animation is also solid. It’s not super detailed, but that’s only because the film is going for the same stylized look of the games albeit with a notable ‘movie-quality’ sheen.

My only complaint is that we didn’t see enough of the action scenes. We know Ratchet & Clank has a strong ‘comedic sci-fi’ angle, but that comedy is also accompanied by loads of action in the games. But, to be fair, this is the first trailer, so I’m confidant we’ll see more action in clips and any future trailers.

All in all, the trailer is only further proof Ratchet & Clank is essentially a straight adaptation of the games (a rarity in movies of its type). The voice actors from the games are there, it was written by the same guy who worked on the games, and it was even animated with the use of existing assets from the games. If it can work as a video game, then there is hope it could work as an actual animated movie.

The film is directed by Kevin Munroe and Jericca Cleland from a screenplay by Insomniac Games writer TJ Fixman, Munroe, and Gerry Swallow.

Ratchet & Clank rides to theaters on April 29, 2016.

What do you think? Does this trailer make you more pumped to see Ratchet & Clank? If you are a fan of the video games, what are your thoughts?
