Ant-Man is the story of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), a former burglar looking to turn his life around for his young daughter. But he soon finds out that life out in the world is much more difficult than he could have imagined as he’s fired from the only job he can find. Shortly after, his friend Luis (Michael Peña) tells him about the empty house of a wealthy old man that is sure to have a grab worth going after. So Scott returns to his life as a burglar and successfully breaches an old safe to grab the goods.

The goods turn out to be a suit that gives him the ability to shrink to the size of an ant and gain immense strength (which happens to be the plan of Dr. Hank Pym [Michael Douglas] all along). With the help of Dr. Pym’s daughter Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Scott is introduced to Dr. Pym’s world and is enlisted to save the world from Pym’s former protégé who copied the suit’s abilities and will sell the technology to the highest bidder. Can Ant-Man save the day? Or will our newest hero have ants in his pants? ^{…I’m so sorry.}

Ant-Man is a strange story. A hero that can turn small at will and defeat bad guys makes no sense (granted neither does much else in the Marvel Universe). But, Ant-Man doesn’t take itself too seriously, which allows Paul Rudd to work his magic as the main character. He’s goofy. He’s funny. He’s aware that ants as allies are dumb but manages to get the viewer to cheer and have fun in the movie theater, which is all people expect when they see a Marvel movie, right?

Ant-Man is a great new take on the Marvel Universe while still incorporating some of those same characters we all know.  Going into this movie I wasn’t too excited; I couldn’t fathom how to make a movie about a miniature superhero interesting. I mean, didn’t DreamWorks already try this? But, like most Marvel movies, I was intrigued and pulled in instantly. The cast was perfect, with plenty of humor to support the story. The crowning moment, and probably the biggest reason to see this movie is the CGI. For someone who absolutely hates 3D movies, I was blown away with just how real it seemed (even when Ant-Man tunneled with ants through a sewer system).

If you’re on the fence about this movie, I can see why. Marvel movies usually have that gritty superhero that has to deal with the world’s destruction. But, like Guardians of the Galaxy, it doesn’t take itself to seriously and makes the audience laugh. Ant-Man is definitely a movie I’d recommend seeing.
