John Korty, co-director of Twice Upon a Time, and Warner Archive confirmed that the cult animated movie is finally getting a DVD release sometime this year.

The film is about two wannabe heroes, Mumford and Ralph, and their friends as they plan to stop a madman from giving everyone nightmares. The DVD will include the original G-rated version and the more mature version that was aired on HBO in 1984.

The film, which took three and a half years to complete, was made by a process called “lumage” and “cutout animation” from backlit translucent fabrics. A lot of the animation was even worked on at Korty’s own house.

Even if you haven’t heard of the film before, there are a few names you might recognize. George Lucas was executive producer on the project. A 17-year-old David Fincher (director of Fight Club) did the film’s special photographic effects. Harley Jessup (production designer on Ratatouille and Monsters Inc.) and Henry Selick (director of Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas) also worked on the film. Lorenzo Music (voice of Garfield in Garfield and Friends) provided the voice of Ralph the “all-purpose animal.”

The DVD will be released in Spring 2015.

Are you excited to see Twice Upon a Time released on DVD?
