Oni Press and Nickelodeon are Teaming Up for ‘Invader Zim’ Comic Book

Disney isn’t the only one reviving its classic characters and properties through the medium of comics.

Courtesy of Comic Book Resources and Bleeding Cool, Oni Press dropped a huge surprise at this year’s ComicsPRO convention in Portland when it announced that it would be reviving the cult favorite Nickelodeon show Invader Zim as an ongoing comic book series.

Set to debut in July, the comic is a collaboration between series creator Jhonen Vasquez and Nickelodeon. No creative team has been set for the books, but show veterans Aaron Alexovich, Eric Trueheart, and Rikki Simons are said be involved with Vasquez working on the book.

In a subsequent press release by Oni Press, Vasquez stated his reasons for why he wanted to return to the world of Invader Zim (albeit in a different format): “I’m always confused when people say how much they miss Invader Zim because the show never stopped running in my head, and then I remember everyone else isn’t in my head,” said show creator Jhonen Vasquez.“I try to imagine the world for all those people who don’t know what Zim’s been up to since the show went off the air and it makes me shudder. How can people live that way? Hopefully this comic helps make the world a better place.”

For the uninitiated, Invader Zim chronicled the exploits of Zim, an extraterrestrial assigned the task of invading earth while the leaders of his race expand their empire. While on Earth, he and his malfunctioning robot sidekick GIR disguise themselves as a human boy and his dog; their plans for world domination complicated by two human beings: Dib, a paranormal investigator determined to stop Zim, and his younger sister, Gaz, who doesn’t think much of Zim’s alien nature. The show lasted only two seasons on Nickelodeon (2001- 2006), with its cable channel counterpart Nicktoons airing the original pilot back in December of 2011.
