What if I told you that an ordinary children’s book was actually a book full of Star Wars: Rebels concept art?

Introducing Star Wars Rebels: A New Hero from our friends as Lucasfilm Press. On the outside, it looks like a childrens’ book meant to get kids excited about the upcoming series Star Wars: Rebels. But all the illustrations are actually pieces of concept art by the Lucasfilm animation art department! I haven’t seen an identity crisis like this since Leia kissed Luke.

While it’s obviously not a comprehensive “Art of…” kind of book, there is plenty of art highlighting the Ezra, the crew of the Ghost, and the Imperial baddies. There is also some beautiful concept art featuring Lothal, the Outer Rim planet where Ezra lives. All of the pieces of concept art are cleverly disguised as book illustrations. There isn’t a lot of variation artist-wise and some of the designs are from early pre-production and don’t resemble the final product (not necessarily a bad thing). I’m still debating whether Lucasfilm was being smart or just lazy with this book.

Star Wars Rebels: A New Hero is about 48 pages long and comes at a modest price ($17.99 U.S. MSRP). The actual content is very juvenile and doesn’t provide any new information for fans of the upcoming series. Just the normal drill, “Hi I’m Ezra, I live on this planet, uh oh here comes the Empire! There’s a group of people called rebels, they have a cool ship, one of them is a jedi, and we all go on space adventures together, etc.” But consider it a good primer on the series for younglings.

And while you read this book to your younglings, you can admire all the sweet concept art! Or just buy the book for yourself.
