Disney to Present Animation-Related Shorts & Panels at LA Shorts Fest on July 29

The LA Shorts Fest is an annual film festival that showcases shorts from around the world. This year’s even will screen 233 films from 17 countries in Los Angeles on July 24-31. Animation shorts are also a big part of this event and there will even be a few Disney animation-related panels that attendees won’t want to miss.

Walt Disney Animation Screening & Panel Discussion – Tuesday, July 29 at 1:00 PM

The Tunes Behind the Toons

This screening of the film The Tunes Behind the Toons tells the story about the composers who are pivotal to creating the the magical worlds of Disney Animation through music. The biggest names in animation music, such as Alan Menken, Randy Newman, and Richard Sherman, will give their insights about their craft and the role of music in augmenting animation characters and stories over the decades.

Following the screening, there will be a panel with Dave Bossert, Mark Watters and Jon Burlingame. Dave Bossert is the film’s producer, in addition to Creative Director and Head of Special Projects at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Mark Watters is the film’s composer and is also known for his work on the popular Disney Afternoon cartoons Goof Troop, Bonkers, and Aladdin. Jon Burlingame is one of the nations’ leading writers on film and TV music, who currently reports for a variety of national media publications.

Blank: A Vinylmation Love Story

Next up will be a screening of a 38-minute stop-motion filed called Blank: A Vinylmation Love Story. Many of you might already have seen this short, as it was released online a few months ago. This short, produced by Disney, tells the story of Blank, an unpainted Vinylmation, as he searches to find his soul mate.

Following this screening, there will be a panel discussion by two people from Disney Internactive who were instrumental in bringing this film to life: Margie Gilmore and Whitfield Scheidegger. Margie Gilmore is VP of Disney Interactive Originals and she and her team focus on bringing Disney stories to life using new techniques and processes. Whitfield Scheidegger is a creative at Disney Interactive Originals and fills various creative rolls during the production process of this film and others like it. He served as a co-director and co-cinematographer for Blank: A Vinylmation Love Story.
