Disney Teases “New” Black-&-White Mickey Short

Mickey-Mouse-Get-a-HorseMickey Mouse is back. Or, he’s unearthed. Or, well… no one quite knows, but a never-before-seen, black-and-white Mickey Mouse cartoon is on the way.

Get a Horse! will debut at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France this June. The only information known so far is that it features Walt Disney as the voice of Mickey, though the very nature of that statement is shrouded in mystery. The debate is: is this a vintage cartoon developed in the 1930s that was just now found in the Disney Archives, or is this a new project developed in 2013 by Walt Disney Animation Studios as a salute to its roots? (Both would be intriguing, but I’d be more interested in seeing the latter myself.)

The report comes from a Huffington Post article that has since been tweeted by Disney Animation’s official Twitter account, confirming its validity. Personally, I don’t think Disney would have passed along the article if the author’s guess was wrong about it being a “new” cartoon with Walt’s voice dubbed in. Why would an official source share with the world an author’s rumored assumption unless it was true? But that’s just my take.

It’s important to note that this is entirely separate from the new series of Mickey Mouse shorts being developed by Walt Disney Television Animation for Disney Channel. Additionally, if this is indeed something new meant to mimic the old, it’s not the first time something of this nature has been done. An episode of the 2001 television series House of Mouse included “old” black-and-white shorts that were just the opposite, and they turned out fantastic.
