New Mickey Mouse Shorts Confirmed for Disney

Mickey-Mouse-Shorts-Disney-ChannelJust announced by D23, Mickey Mouse will star in an all-new series of cartoon shorts. Beginning June 28, Mickey and all his pals will be seen in new escapades set in exotic locales all over the globe like Beijing and Venice, to name two. The unnamed series will air on Disney Channel and Disney.com, and will be produced by Walt Disney Television Animation, the same studio responsible for recent hits like Phineas and Ferb and Gravity Falls.

While the toony theme of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ vintage Mickey shorts will be retained, the animation style, as pictured above, looks considerably different (though everything will still be in 2D traditional animation). Helming the project is Paul Rudish, whose previous work includes Cartoon Network’s Dexter’s Laboratory and The Powerpuff Girls.

Expect the shorts to be around 4-5 minutes: just long enough to squeeze into a commercial break on Disney Channel, much like the network already does with Cars Toons, Toy Story Toons, and, believe it or not, the classic cartoons that gave Mickey and the gang their start. Shortened, redubbed with current character voices, and billed as interstitials called Have a Laugh!, the old Mickey shorts air daily. They must be popular enough to warrant this all-new series from Television Animation. Not bad for an 85-year-old mouse.

Watch the first short, Croissant de Triomphe, below!
