D23 Expo 2017: Pixar & DisneyToon Studios Panel

Animation fans rejoice at the exciting news we received at the D23 Expo Animation Panel! In this post we are going to focus on the news out of Pixar and DisneyToon Studios. In another post we will cover Walt Disney Animation Studios.

DisneyToon Studios

We had one update out of DisneyToon Studios. Host John Lasseter said they are working hard “reimagining and reinventing the studio”. Then he introduced a “new film to celebrate new heights of aviation” with a clip called “Speed Test”. This appears to be a new entry in the Planes franchise as the speed planes had eyes and appear to be the characters of the film as opposed to being flown by the characters. I do not know if Dusty or any of the previous Planes characters will appear. It will be released April 12, 2019.

Pixar

Incredibles 2

The first film for Pixar was The Incredibles 2. Many are eagerly anticipating this sequel and director Brad Bird gave us our first taste. First, we got a clip of Edna Mode’s influence on high fashion and then they got into the story.

As previously announced, we learned the sequel will start right where the original film left off.Where the original focused on Bob’s journey, this is going to be about the entire family including Jack Jack. However, the family doesn’t know Jack Jack has powers yet.

New technology will allow the characters to be more expressive.  They also get a new high tech house full of sharp corners for Jack Jack. There are going to be new heroes with a variety of powers and Elastigirl is going to be at the forefront while Bob stays at home with the kids. We saw a clip of Jack Jack fighting with a raccoon he thinks is a thief, which was pretty funny.

Toy Story 4

We got a little bit of information about Toy Story 4. It was announced John Lasseter will no longer be co-directing the film but Josh Cooley will be the lone director. Next, they presented a behind the scenes look at Pixar Studios and got a few peaks at some new characters like a bunny and a girl doll named Lulu. They also mentioned something about them doing research on an RV trip so that could be hint!

Original Suburban Fantasy Film

The most exciting announcement of the panel was a new film in the works with director Dan Scanlon (Monsters University) at the helm. It is a world with no humans- only elves, trolls and sprites- but still like our own in many ways. 2 elf brothers whose father died when they were toddlers go on a journey to try and reconnect with him somehow. This mimics Scanlon’s own experience losing his father at a very young age and will probably be very heartfelt.

He said the society is similar to ours because they created machines to do magic because it is easier. That is a fascinating idea- that even magic can’t keep up with technology.

Coco

The final Pixar film discussed is their upcoming film Coco. We didn’t get a whole lot new on it but the themes of honoring our ancestors and the bonds of family were emphasized. We saw some images of the plot and met the cast. However, the highlight was a performance by Benjamin Bratt of a song called “Remember Me” written by Frozen‘s Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

So what do you think of Pixar’s D23 news? What project are you most excited for? Please share in the comments!

Awesome!! Will the “Remember Me” song be featured in the finished product of Coco?

    • Rachel Wagner

      Yes I believe so

  • Yellow

Oh goodness, is this a new Planes sequel, or Spaceships?

    • Rachel Wagner

It is not clear whether this is a Planes sequel or just a similar idea of a movie about planes.

    • Manuel Orozco

If it is a Planes 3, won’t be surprised but I’m excited to see what this new movie can do.

LOL. I can see it now!

    • David K

Love what disneytoon studios are doing. The idea of Spoons is very creative lol

  • Chinoiserie

The fantasy film sounds a bit of a mix between King of Elves and Zootopia with no humans. I am always interested in fantasy so exited. Pixar should know that people are a bit tired of sequels so they should release more info on the original films like this one and I believe they have some others in the works or has at one point at least.

    • Manuel Orozco

The Zootopia comparison is totally noticeable. As for sequels in the next decade I want to see more originality almost as much as you do. But still want Inside Out 2, Cars 4 and Finding Marlin.

    • Rachel Wagner

It’s hard for them to know that when Finding Dory makes a billion but I would have loved to hear about what Pete Docter is working on

  • Harith Sami

Don’t forget about the Wreck-it Ralph 2 trailer (disnye is totally ripping off the Emoji movie :p )

I’m not actually surprised the Cars universe is growing with this Space movie or the Underminer battle starting Incredibles 2 off. However, what does surprise me is the Lopezes writing a song for Coco, Elastagirl taking the big spotlight in Incredibles 2 and John Lasseter stepping down as director of Toy Story 4.

  • Very excited to see how all these films turn out!! Not sure about that other Cars spin off but the art for it looks so good and really atmospheric! Seriously wish I was there to witness it! 🙂

  • Marielle

    How good was “Remember Me”?

    • Rachel Wagner

It seemed like a very catchy tune

  • Jordan M.

Not gonna lie, got chocked up a little reading about Scanlon’s fantasy film.

    • Rachel Wagner

Me too. Was most exciting news of the day

  • I am definitely most excited for the new fantasy project from pixar! I might be getting ahead of myself or even off topic here, but I really hope we get awesome character designs for this film! For whatever reason, people seem to always design fantasy creatures similarly, which is crazy seeing how they’re fiction and have no guidelines as to what they look like! Let’s see some new stuff Pixar!

Also, just a minor note, thanks for making it clear that DisneyToon is behind the new planes film. Other articles I’ve read were calling it a pixar film and it was honestly driving me crazy.

    • Rachel Wagner

You are welcome! Thanks for reading. I was most excited about the fantasy film also

  • Landon Kemp

That suburban fantasy film does actually sound kinda interesting, especially that whole combination of technology with magic thing.
