Not since the 80s have Legend of Zelda fans been able to watch their favorite tight-wearing hero on the small screen. But now it looks like they might be able to see Link on their TVs again soon.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Nintendo is working “closely” with Netflix to develop a live-action series, which would follow the video game franchise’s main protagonist Link. Netflix describes the series as a Game of Thrones-esque show, but geared for a family audience.
Of course, no actor or plot details have been announced, but you better believe that fans have begun speculating. Will Link and Princess Zelda be played by newcomers or by well-known celebrities? Also, while not mentioned, it is possible that if the series is successful, it could spin off into a feature-length live-action Zelda film, which is what Zelda fans have been clamoring for for years. If that happens, then it will be one of the first Nintendo franchises to hit theatres since 1993’s Super Mario Bros..
Currently, no writer has been attached to the Legend of Zelda Netflix series. The report also indicates that since it’s so early in development, either party could pull the plug at any time. As a result, no word on when filming will begin or a possible release date.
In the meantime, Nintendo is working on the newest Zelda game for the Wii U, which will debut later in 2015. Check out the trailer below:
