Award season is upon us, folks! With the official announcement of Oscar nomations this morning, we thought it would be appropriate to do a master post for tha animation noms for the big three film award shows: the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, and the BAFTAs.
2013 ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS Best Animated Feature Film Brave (Pixar) – Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman Frankenweenie (Disney) – Tim Burton ParaNorman (LAIKA) – Sam Fell and Chris Butler The Pirates! Band of Misfits (Aardman) – Peter Lord Wreck-It Ralph (Walt Disney Animation Studios) – Rich Moore Best Short Film – Animated Adam and Dog – Minkyu Lee Fress Guacamole – PES Head over Heels – Timothy Reckart and Fodhla Cronin Maggie Simpson in “The Longest Daycare” – David Silverman Paperman – John Kahrs 2013 GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATIONS Best Animated Feature Film Brave (Pixar) Frankenweenie (Disney) Hotel Translyvania (Sony Pictures Animation) The Rise of the Guardians (DreamWorks) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) 2013 EE BRITISH ACADEMY FILM AWARDS (BAFTA) Best Animated Film Brave (Pixar) – Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman Frankenweenie (Disney) – Tim Burton ParaNorman (LAIKA) – Sam Fell, Chris Butler Best Short Animation Here to Fall – Kris Kelly, Evelyn McGrath I’m Fine Thanks – Eamonn O’Neill The Making of Longbird – Will Anderson, Ainslie Henderson Overall it looks like a great list, even though it is quite varied among the different award outlets. To each their own. What I’m most impressed with is that out of the five Oscar nominees for best animated film, three are stop-motion features! At least the Academy recognizes their greatness (unlike audiences who simple didn’t show up to fill the theatre seats). If you’re like me and you haven’t seen many of the shorts: never fear! Last year, various theaters across the country had special engagements in which movie fans could pay to see all of the Oscar-nominated animated shorts in one go (you can also see the live-action shorts as well). To find if the shorts are playing in your area, got to the ShortsHD website. Congratulations to all the nominees! Best of luck in the upcoming award season! Who do you think will take home the top prize?
