I’m going to be talking about this shockingly dark (children’s?) movie in depth, so turn back now, if you don’t want to know what horrors await you in Chirin’s Bell!

Are you the kind of person who thinks that Disney's Bambi, is too sweet and innocent? Do you think the The Lion King was a bit too happy-go-lucky? If so, perhaps you would prefer a movie like Chirin’s Bell instead!

Chirin’s Bell is like if, instead of Bambi being raised by his father after the death of his mother, he sought out the hunters who killed his mother and insisted they teach him how to use a gun. Or if Simba, instead of running from Scar after his father’s murder, decided to join Scar in his conquest of the Pride Lands. Because, that’s basically what happens in this movie!

Chirin’s Bell tells the story of a tiny, adorable lamb whose mother is brutally murdered by a wolf, right on top of him, as she shields him with her body. This shocking tragedy, in what appears to be an adorable kid’s movie from the makers of Hello Kitty, (Yes, really!) ends up leading to an agonizing, two minute long scene of poor baby Chirin snuggling with his mother’s dead body, realizing she’s actually dead, and then wailing and sobbing and thrashing around, all over her corpse, begging her to wake up, all while the other sheep look on in horror and sadness. Holy. Cow. Was this scene dark. And it really only gets darker from there!

Initially I thought that Chirin was going to seek revenge upon the wolf. Once he realizes his mother is truly dead, he flees into the mountains in search of the wolf, but instead of just wanting to fight him, he begs him to teach him his ways. And then, just to get even darker, once little baby Chirin starts to grow up a bit, he gets his horns, and then he joins the wolf on his hunts! And he literally uses his new horns to kill for the wolf! I think Chirin just kind of went insane after his mother died.

In the end, after the wolf orders him to murder a pack of watchdogs in order to get at barn full of his fellow sheep, which he also wants Chirin to kill for him, he finally realizes what a monster he has become. I mean, he kills all the dogs first, but he sees the light before he gets to the sheep, so that’s something I guess. Right? Anyway, at long last, Chirin finally turns on the wolf, and kills him instead.

You’d think that would mean redemption and a happy ending right? The grateful sheep will obviously welcome their prodigal son home with thankful hearts! Wrong. This ain’t no Disney movie! The sheep are obviously terrified of him, having just seen him kill every last watch dog that had been guarding them only moments before.

The sheep lock themselves in the barn, leaving Chirin to wander sadly back into the mountains where he mournfully begs for the dead wolf’s forgiveness for killing him, and he lives out the rest of his days, wandering the mountains alone. The end!

So yeah! A happy funtimes movie for the whole family! Bring the kids!

All joking aside, despite the darkness, I think I may actually be kind of glad I watched this? It was so incredibly, completely, 100% totally different than anything else I’ve ever seen, that in some kind of dark, slightly morbid way, I think I may have actually kind of enjoyed it! However, at the same time, I really don’t know how likely I will be to revisit it. It was just so, so dark, and if you know me, you know I far prefer to watch things that make me happy, so this is probably just a one-time watch for me.

If this had been a happier story, even if they changed nothing about it until the end and made it a story about redemption, I think I would look at it differently, but the fact that Chirin himself became just as dark and evil as the wolf, like, literally killing for, and alongside the wolf, even if he realized in the end he was wrong, just kind of soured it for me. I was really hoping for redemption, because I am a sucker for a good redemption story, but the fact that it never came was kind of disappointing to me, even if I did enjoy just how shockingly different this movie was.

If you’re a fan of Japanese animation, dark stories, tragedies, or if you just want something totally different than your average, mainstream, American animated movie, then I think I probably would recommend this one. But if you just want a happy story about an adorable little sheep, well, I think Aardman Animation might have a franchise you’d enjoy instead.

All in all, this set is a must own for fans of Hey Arnold! If you were a casual fan who hasn't ever watched the series all the way through, (Like me) This set is the perfect way to catch up. And if you are a massive fan who doesn't yet own the episodes, this set in a must buy.

[DVD Review] Hey Arnold! I saw the other two films just once each, but I didn't feel the need to buy them immediately after release. That changed with this one!

In Hotel Transylvania 3, the characters you loved are back, but there was something about the cruise ship setting (as well as the final dub-step/EDM showdown with the big bad at the end) that made me absolutely love this movie. I know that not everyone feels this way, but for me, Hotel Transylvania 3 was a lot of fun, and a must own.

But that's just about the movie. Maybe you liked it well enough, but you're waiting to see what kind of extras this set has before you decide to buy it or not. Well, fear not!

Solo: A Star Wars Story is out on Blu-ray! One of the most talked about movies of the year, (But perhaps not the most viewed) is available for Star Wars fans to own now, but is it worth it? We've got all the details.

The Movie

I know that this movie had a very troubled production history. Sadly that seems to be something that has happened with several high-profile movies from Disney in the past few years, but for Solo, at least in my opinion, I don't think that had too much of a detrimental effect on the final product. It's very likely that it affected how well the movie did financially, but I don't think it affected how good the story was.

Personally I loved Solo. I actually saw it in theaters more than once, and I almost never do that with any movie, even ones I really enjoy. I thought Solo was just a fun, old-fashioned space adventure film, and that it was able to stand up there with the main films in the Star Wars saga. For all the controversial decisions that the recent films in the saga have made, I thought this one stuck (mostly) very close to the feel of the original trilogy.

I thought that Alden Ehrenreich made for a great Han. I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical going in. I didn't think he looked or sounded quite enough like Harrison Ford in the trailers, but I was willing to keep an open mind. My skepticism disappeared within the first few minutes though. He may not have been the spitting image of the Han we know and love from the original films, but he captured his mannerisms in such a way that I could easily believe that this was a young, inexperienced version of the character, and that he would eventually become the more hardened Han that we met in A New Hope.

One of my favorite things in any sci-fi movie is the creatures, and this more was packed with them. I loved the creatures here, I loved the droids, and I loved that so many of them were brought to life with practical effects. I wish more films would take this approach when they need to realize fantastic creatures for their stories. I'm not one who hates CG, and there are definitely CG characters I love just as much as some of these practical ones, but I feel like the use of the practical effects just adds so much more of a human touch to these creatures and characters than CG is generally capable of conveying.

Obviously Chewie falls into this area, and he was amazing as always. The dynamic between Han and Chewie was spot-on, and one of the best parts of the film. I loved everything about him, and their friendship. Joonas Suotamo has done such a great job taking over this character from Peter Mayhew. Even though he doesn't actually speak for the character, he does an amazing job in bringing him to life.

I know that L3-37 was a controversial addition to the story, and while I do have a few issues with her character, on the whole, I actually liked her. I do understand why many feel otherwise, and I think that certain aspects of her story could have been handled differently, but on the whole, I enjoyed her character. I also loved that they actually had Phoebe Waller-Bridge on set and in costume for the character. Like I said, the practical effects just add such a human touch to these characters, and L3 was no exception.

One more thing that really made this film a winner in my eyes was Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. In fact, if there was one thing I would change about this film, it would be to give him more screen-time! I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, because even the negative reviews I've seen have generally praised his portrayal. I really hope that we get an anthology film focused on him one day.

All in all, even though this film is not perfect, I had fun, and in the end, that's all I really want from a movie. If you're a Star Wars fan who missed Solo the first time around, and given the lower box-office reception, that's statistically quite likely, I would have to highly recommend it. No film is ever 100% perfect, and as long as you can accept that about this movie, I think it's just a fun time all around.

Blu-ray Features

Now, for those of you who did see the movie, and want to know if the features make this set worth buying, I would have to say yes! This Blu-ray is chock full of bonus content, and just about everything here is stuff that Star Wars fans are definitely going to want to check out! There is so much more included here than I expected, that I haven't even had a chance to watch everything yet! I was actually kind of expecting a more bare-bones release, given the low numbers that it did in theaters, but I am very glad to see that I was wrong! I am definitely looking forward to diving deeper into these features!

Here's a run down of everything we're getting in this set. The only things we don't seem to be getting is a commentary track and bloopers. Those are two things I usually look forward to, but I can't say their exclusion is surprising, given the production history. Aside from those, it looks like we've got an excellent assortment of bonus content to watch either way, and I am especially glad to see so many deleted scenes.

Final Thoughts

If you're a die-hard Star Wars fan, you probably already bought this set. There's so much here that it's kind of a no-brainer. But if you're a more casual fan who may not have gotten around to checking it out yet, I'd say just go for it. Solo is a fun, sci-fi, space adventure, and for the most part, I think it was able to capture the feel of the original films very well. It may not be perfect, but it's fun, and I think it's definitely worth adding to your collection.

The Millennium Falcon: From Page to Park

An exclusive look at the history of the most famous ship in the galaxy, its origin and development, and how it will translate in one of the most anticipated expansions in Disneyland’s history.

Deleted Scenes

Proxima’s Den
Corellian Foot Chase
Han Solo: Imperial Cadet
The Battle of Mimban: Extended
Han Versus Chewie: Extended
Snowball Fight!
Meet Dryden: Extended
Coaxium Double-Cross

Final Thoughts

If you're a die-hard Star Wars fan, you probably already bought this set. There's so much here that it's kind of a no-brainer. But if you're a more casual fan who may not have gotten around to checking it out yet, I'd say just go for it. Solo is a fun, sci-fi, space adventure, and for the most part, I think it was able to capture the feel of the original films very well. It may not be perfect, but it's fun, and I think it's definitely worth adding to your collection.

Hotel Transylvania 3 is out on home video, and we have all the details on the Blu-ray release!

If you're a fan of Genndy Tartakovsky's previous work, then you're going to want to check out Hotel Transylvania 3, which was, at least in this reviewer's opinion, the best movie in the Hotel Transylvania series yet!

Up until now, I have enjoyed this series, but not enough to go back to very often.

This set is pack with extras, and has such a variety, that there is really something for everyone! From the animation fans wanting a peek behind the scenes, to the young fans who want music videos and bonus shorts!

Extras

Audio Commentary

First and foremost we have a commentary with Genndy Tartakovsky himself, and he is joined by Scott Wills, the production designer, and Michael Ford the VFX supervisor.

Original Shorts

We're getting two new original shorts on this release, Puppy! and Goodnight Mr. Foot.

Scary-oke Sing-Alongs

For fans of the movie's music, there are also 7 sing-along videos.

Dennis Had a Giant Dog
Monsters Like to Party Down
Oh These Wolf Pups!
Hush Little Monster
Twinkle, Twinkle Little Bat
Vlady Had a Little Drac
Holiday Scary-oke “Deck the Halls”
