I agree! We talk about this a bit more in the Luck episode, but I think their hands were tied with Luck. They probably had investors or commitments to get Luck out, so they did what they could with it. Because we know Lasseter isn't afraid to totally cut projects even if they are pretty far in development.

However, considering the people involved in Skydance, I was hoping their output would feel a bit more classic than what we've seen so far. Though perhaps that'll come to pass as we see more of their longer-in-development projects.
