Honestly shita is a nitwit. Laputa proves that people can live a part from the earth, the downfall of the laputians was not inevitable and they were obviously extremely successful for a long time. Furthermore, the magic crystals are presumably a green energy source, compared with the filthy industrial coal power of the present day surface dwellers. Shita’s mentality reflects the sort of primitive, anti-scientific peasant superstition that plagues most people and only serves to obstruct progress and cause undue hardship.

A few parents I know raised questions about this, but most of them (and their kids) make the assumption that, because it's marketed as a children's movie, the main characters will survive anyway. Most parents admit they didn't actually think of it that way. (I asked around after you posted this)

Except the review is inaccurate about one thing: this movie has two dubs, not three. Streamline picked up the Magnum dub and distributed it; they never created their own dub, as I mentioned in another post.
