As awards season is coming down to the wire for this year’s competing short films, we now learn of a new, upcoming short that may well be a 2015 standout.

Animation Magazine recently reported that Pixel Veil Productions has released a trailer for its latest short film The Alchemist’s Letter. Slated for the 2015 festival circuit, the film is described as a “visually rich, darkly inventive fairy tale” and features the voices of two-time Academy Award nominee John Hurt and up-and-coming kid actor Eloise Webb, who will make here debut as Young Ella in this year’s Cinderella.

You can watch the trailer here:

There’s also an official synopsis, which reads as follows:

When Veridian, an estranged young man, receives his late alchemist father Nicholas’ inheritance (voice of Academy Award nominated John Hurt), he is exposed to the ill-fated reality that his father built a tumultuous gold-making machine powered by his own memories. The film takes viewers on an enchanted journey through the vessels of the machine in exploration of the contents of the alchemist’s most precious memories, all in an attempt to give Veridian one last life lesson and save his relationship with his daughter (voice of Eloise Webb) from following down the same fateful path.

Pixel Veil Productions, the studio making the film, is made up of former artists from LAIKA and its former short content division LAIKA/House (now HouseSpecial). Stevens himself is a award-winning commercial director who works at HouseSpecial.

What do you think? Would you like to see the short film in its entirety?
