Sunday November 2nd, The Japan Society of New York City is hosting a family event that they are calling Obake Family Day: Experience Japan’s Ghost and Goblins. As part of their list of events, which includes everything from mask making, spooky storytelling to creepy calligraphy, they will also be screening a series of wonderful animated shorts by fantastic directors including Koji Yamamura (Muybridge’s Strings, Franz Kafka’s A Country Doctor), Shuhei Morita (Tokyo Ghoul, Tsukomo).

The screenings will include:

Fox Spirit (3 min.) Dir. Hitomi Nakamura: Fox spirits have overtaken Japan! Where are they all going?Scary rating: 1 (out of 5)

Spirit of the Night (7 min.) Directed by Hiroko Satsuma: A ghost visits a boy while he tries to sleep, leading him on a strange and wonderful journey. Scary rating: 2

The Elevator (8 min.) Dir. Koji Yamamura: A trip down the elevator unexpectedly takes a young boy into a forest deep underground filled with goblins and singing birds. Scary rating: 2

Kakurenbo (25 min.) Dir. Shuhei Morita: A group of kids wearing masks decide to play hide and seek in the ruins of an abandoned city. One by one they start to disappear as demons are awakened.

Scary rating: 5

So if you and the family want to continue enjoying everything spooky of the season, this may be a great event to attend. Arts and crafts and shorts! Advanced tickets can be found online at $12 for adults, $6 for kids (3-12 years old). Tickets are also on sale day of at $15 for adults, $8 for kids.
