As far as we know, Moana is still going to be the first using the hybrid technique. I can only imagine how beautiful that film will be (South Pacific tropical setting, scenes at sea, etc.). But no, Disney hasn't backed down from that statement yet. I imagine the process needs a bit more refining until they can trust doing a feature. Hence..the four year wait....

As good as the Zbrush model is, it doesn't capture the awesome look of Hiro of 2D. It just doesn't. Which is a shame - the 2D concept looks FANTASTIC!

Man, this should've been the first feature they do with that sweet, hybrid "Paperman" technology they're developing where they get the computer to draw the linework. It would have been incredible looking then then. Is Moana still going to be their first feature to utilize that tech, or did they back off of that statement?

Spending too much time and budget on making the 3D animation's storyboard to become beautiful is quite pointless don't you think? Specially if they won't use it anyway. Just speaking in a financial POV, not artistic POV.

Here's a bit of a comparison. Frozen and tangled did both have some beautiful sketches, but most of it looks like this. With movies like Pocahontas and Mulan, there are loads beautiful drawn pieces used for storyboards.

Compare the storyboard art between the CG and traditionally animated movies. My only point was that I find the traditional artwork more charming and expressive. There is still some awesome hand drawn and painted concept art with Frozen and Tangled, but just not nearly as much. I encourage you to look up Pocahontas storyboards, and then Frozen storyboards. Compare them, and you will understand.

Hmmm, you seem to be implying that there are only 2d Anime and that deviating from it is lack of respect to it. Well, that's not true. There are plenty of Anime that use GCI to some extent. The most recent one's I saw was Black Rock Shooter, which had full blown action scenes completely done with CGI, and Girls und Panzer, which used it only on the tanks. Ghost in the shell also has quite a bit. So yeah, Disney isn't disrespecting anime by making it CGI and this constant hating on CGI is getting old. You want 2d anime? there is plenty of that, watch that instead if you are so put off by CGI.

Amen. I think there's a right way ("Teen Titans") and a wrong way ("Speed Racer" film *shudders) to combine East and West elements in filmmaking. Something tells me Disney could've made this a live-action and GCI film like a lot of the recent Marvel movies but making it all animated could appeal to a wider audience. I just noticed in the Big Hero 6 trailer that it says it takes place in San Fransokyo.

It reminds me strongly of "Teen Titans" in a good way. Though the original comic book took place in New York, the creators said they wanted to get out of the Gotham/Metropolis/East Coast mentality. Putting the Titans into a fictional West Coast town gave the atmosphere a young fresh energy vibe and I'm getting a similar sense from "Big Hero 6".
