Listen: Alessia Cara’s Version of “How Far I’ll Go” from ‘Moana’ + Lyrics

Disney has released the end credits song from their upcoming animated tentpole Moana, titled “How Far I’ll Go” and performed by Alessia Cara. The track can be listened to in its entirety below, and it turns out it’s really good.

In terms of style and writing, “How Far I’ll Go” is an ‘I Want’ song in the vein of Disney classics like “Just Around The Riverbend” (from Pocahontas) and “Go the Distance” (from Hercules). In the film, the song will be performed by Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) as she sets off on her voyage. While the song will inevitably (and unfairly) be compared to Frozen’s “Let It Go,” “How Far I’ll Go” is a song on a completely different scale. In fact, the song channels the old-school 90s Disney feel of the main character dreaming of life beyond her home and seeking adventure.

Alessia Cara’s version of “How Far I’ll Go” will be featured on the Moana soundtrack, which  releases on November 18 just before the film releases on November 23. The soundtrack features original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina with an original score composed by Mark Mancina.

“How Far I’ll Go” Lyrics – Alessia Cara Version

I’ve been standing at the edge of the water
‘Long as I can remember, never really knowing why
I wish I could be the perfect daughter
But I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try
Every turn I take, every trail I track
Every path I make, every road leads back
To the place I know, where I can not go, though I long to be

See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I’ll know, if I go there’s just no telling how far I’ll go

I know everybody on this island, seems so happy on this island
Everything is by design
I know everybody on this island has a role on this island
So maybe I can roll with mine
I can lead with pride, I can make us strong
I’ll be satisfied if I play along
But the voice inside sings a different song
What is wrong with me?

See the light as it shines on the sea? It’s blinding
But no one knows, how deep it goes
And it seems like it’s calling out to me, so come find me
And let me know, what’s beyond that line, will I cross that line?

See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind on my sail in the sea stays behind me
One day I’ll know, how far I’ll go

What do you think about the music of ‘Moana’? Are you excited?
