Nintendo’s New ‘Kirby’ Game Gets Claymation Look

The new Nintendo game, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, is designed to look like traditional claymation and is available on the Wii U platform.

Kirby is perhaps the best character to appear in this visual style as it matches his cuteness. He’s bright pink and spherical which, even before adding a Play-Doh-like effect, results in a child-friendly and harmless design. The claymation-like graphics appear so real and tangible that one is amazed they’re actually CG. The visuals were achieved by giving Kirby and his world uneven surfaces to make them look as if hands were used to mould them like real clay. Nintendo also deliberately lowered the frame rate to give the overall animation a slightly choppier look.

The game itself has been praised by reviewers, with Metacritic awarding it 76 out of 100, while IGN rated it a solid 8 out of 10. Check out the trailer below and see the look for yourself:

The game is out now to buy on Amazon!

What do you think of the look of Kirby and the Rainbow Curse? Do you think it adds anything to the gaming experience?
