The nostalgia bug appears to have bitten the animation industry once again. This time, the effects are now being felt on the small screen.
Deadline recently reported that Disney XD has ordered a new animated series that reboots the classic Ducktales cartoon that aired from 1987-1990 as part of The Disney Afternoon daily syndicated cartoon block.
Not much is known about the reboot just yet, but we are told that the new series will once again follow Scrooge McDuck and his three grandnephews Huey, Dewey and Louie as they embark on high-flying adventures across the globe.
Scrooge and company will also be joined by an extensive cast of returning characters from the original series. Those characters include Donald Duck, Duckworth, Gyro Gearloose, Launchpad McQuack, Flintheart Glomgold, Magica DeSpell & Poe, Ma Beagle and the Beagle Boys (Burger Beagle, Bouncer Beagle), Mrs. Beakley and Webbigail Vanderquack.
“DuckTales has a special place in Disney’s TV animation history, it drew its inspiration from Disney Legend Carl Barks’ comic books and through its storytelling and artistic showmanship, set an enduring standard for animated entertainment that connects with both kids and adults,” said Marc Buhaj, SVP, Programming and General Manager, Disney XD. “Our new series will bring that same energy and adventurous spirit to a new generation.”
Interestingly enough, this news comes as much of Disney TV’s classic characters and properties are making a return in comic book form.
Disney and IDW are set to kick off a new line of licensed comics with an Uncle Scrooge ongoing series, while Joe Books recently released a collected run of Boom! Studios’ Darkwing Duck comics that will also be followed up with a new ongoing series.
The new Ducktales reboot is slated for a 2017 premiere.
What do you think? Are you interested in a Ducktales reboot? Are you familiar with the original series?
