I think Coraline for me was the first stop motion film that was darker that I embraced IMMEDIETELY!! Not saying I didn't embrace Nightmare before Christmas or Corpse Bride but those when I was growing up I felt a little scared then having grown used to, but I was at the right age when this came out and I just love it still to this day for it's creativity and being able to be scary without being really "scarring" in a sense? Or just at least not gory or something a child wouldn't see in an R film? I think like that lols!!

A true gem. Especially considering it was essentially a new genre. There'd never been a mainstream kid's horror movie to my mind. (Maybe Monster House, though there they pull the, "Oh, and everyone's okay!") Though weirdly sexual for a kid's movie. Those writers evidently had a preoccupation with boobies. Lovely review, enjoyed the phrase, "a bit of a monomythic mentor".

Nicely written review! I'm not a fan of Tim Burton-esque fare, but dang does this sound creepy! Definitely a unique concept, and nice to see a different vibe in an animated film for a change.

I may have mentioned this elsewhere but I why I like Coraline so much compared to Laika's following film's is that it does not really feel like a family film. Now I like all of the Laika films that came after but In all of them I kind of felt there were some elements or scenes in them that were inserted just to have a more kid-friendly tone. Not with Coraline.

Coraline feels like they tried their hardest to translate the book of Neil Gaiman onto the screen without compromising on the darker tone of it. It truly feels like a modern fable, something I have not gotten out of an animated film in a long time.
