There's a lot to love about this movie. What I love about it is how captures all the magic and wonder of the book in a respective and faithful way, but also the story and characters are executed and the wonderful songs and score by Richard and Robert Sherman. I think it's not only one of the few animated gems of the 1970s, but also one of the best animated films not produced by Disney or Pixar.

Thank you, Jeremiah! Excellent point about Lots in Common. Thank you for adding a valuable point. Sounds like we both love this movie equally.

One of my all-time favorites. Lovely review, Elijah.

True, Lots in Common has nothing to do with the plot. Still, there's been some friction between characters, and this scene shows them uniting in song for the first time, despite their differences.

For me, the standout song is Mother Earth and Father Time. That song broke my heart as a kid. It's so wise, so sad and happy, so carefully but naturally written. I haven't seen the film in a few years but my heart clearly remembers that song.

I remember seeing this take on CHARLOTTE'S WEB a couple of times, but upon reflection, I personally don't think that E.B. White's writing was really meant to be adapted to the screen so literally, whereas, conversely, it worked with such films as WATERSHIP DOWN, the 1995 made-for-TV animated take on THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS, and, arguably, THE MANY ADVENTURES OF WINNIE THE POOH. Furthermore, as far as the casting goes, I think that Henry Gibson sounds much too old to be a convincing voice for Wilbur; for that matter, so does the actress who voices Fern.

Overall, I much prefer the 2006 live-action remake, which further develops the characters, casts appropriate-sounding actors (the young Dominic Scott Kay as Wilbur, Julia Roberts as Charlotte, Steve Buscemi as Templeton, etc.), and manages to build on the story without deviating too much from the source material.
