I'm leaning toward Ezra dropping the Jedi title, like Ahsoka. I kind of doubt they'll kill him off too. I hope I'm not jinxing it, but I'm just hoping we aren't going to have any more main character deaths by the end. I'm not expecting that, but I am hoping.

Thanks for your comments, Jonathan. While there is indeed lose and tragedy in the Star Wars universe, I don’t see this show as ending unwell or utterly desolate. Bittersweet with loss, pain, and sacrifice, yes. But not on the same scale that we’ve seen in “Clone Wars”. Filoni and Co. have commented the Rebel Alliance’s first big lasting victory is when they steal the Death Star plans. In the meantime we see small persistent victories in “Rebels”. Since this show began there is now a rightful leader is on the throne of Mandalore, Ezra has encountered the Dark Side without succumbing fully, Kanan was knighted by the Order, Mon Mothma has joined the fight, and defectors like Kallus and Wedge are being recruited.

So I don’t think the writers will doom Ezra to a fate of death or darkness, especially so soon after losing Kanan. But I am impressed that we, the fans, were left guessing whether or not Kanan would die in this show because there weren’t any huge omens or foreshadowing. It is inevitable that the mentor will leave and pass on his legacy to his student; we just didn’t expect that sudden inferno that Kanan shielded his family from. When I was a kid who saw “The Lion King” for the first time I remember Mufasa telling Simba how the sun would set on his own time—and I still teared up when Mufasa died.

As for Yoda’s comment about “last of the Jedi”, Dave Filoni has said not to interpret everything Jedi says as an absolute. Kanan’s death was more about enforcing the duty of a Jedi being selfless as opposed to making sure Yoda’s prophecy was complete. So again, I wouldn’t expect them to do the same with Ezra. I’m willing to bet that Kanan is indeed the huge wolf Ezra encountered. Will Ezra himself transcend the Force to become someone or something else? Possibly. Or some suggest he will stay in-tuned to the Force without calling himself “Jedi” anymore, similar to Ahsoka who remained on the Light Side after she left the Order.

I like to see the similarities and contrasts to Ezra and Luke. While Luke’s destiny to save the entire galaxy, Ezra’s own mission is an intimate one focused on saving Lothal. And yet as the audience we feel the stakes have never been higher as the show is steadily approaching its end…and the entrance to “Rogue One” and the original trilogy begins.
