It is extremely faithful to the spirit of the books, the story is very entertaining, the animation is impressive, especially considering the film’s relatively small budget, and the voice acting is all around excellent. In addition, this is one of the funniest animated films that I have ever seen.

There is so much wit put into this film that could have easily just been an excuse to go for only low brow humor. But no, the film only uses low brow humor when necessary and focuses most of it’s humor on 4th wall breaking, dialogue, and physical comedy. That and the wonderfully cartoony animation and use of multiple other animation styles make the visuals a treat for the eyes.

It’s animated films like Captain Underpants I really can appreciate. Films that embrace the cartoon side of animation and do things that live action could never pull off.

The astonishing animation techniques and self awareness in the screenwriting easily makes up for the humor being off in bits and pieces. Potty comedy doesn’t usually work on me anymore but at least it wasn’t too over the top. I’m not a Kevin Hart fan but I enjoyed his voicing here and in Secret Life of Pets.
