I didn't say it in my article, but Pocahontas was on my mind as I wrote last few paragraphs. It had so much potential, but they made some serious mis-steps, and it really shows. But filmmakers seem to be getting better at thinking about how to accurately depict other cultures. You listed some great, recent examples, but the farther back you go, the fewer and fewer you find. There have been several good examples these last few years, so I really hope this trend continues! :)

As a man of mixed Persian ancestry (on my father's side), I can tell you that PERSEPOLIS was a rather personal viewing experience for me; it really opened my eyes to a view of Iran that I hadn't really known up until recently.

And I agree, animation is the perfect medium by which to introduce Westerners to other cultures, although I hasten to add that some attempts at this (COCO, PERSEPOLIS, MOANA, KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS, and THE BREADWINNER, among others) are better at portraying non-Western cultures in a more accurate and non-biased way than others (the well-intentioned, yet very flawed, POCAHONTAS leaps to mind).
