Because Brad Bird was directing Mission Impossible 4 and Tomorrowland.

Can't do a Sequel without the Creator.

1) Thumbelina. I love the songs and animation so much! Sure there are the creepy/slightly racist caricature frogs, but overall the movie is lovely. Plus Jodi Benson is the voice of Thumbelina!

2) Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Enough said. Deserves WAY more credit and deserves a live action film.

3) Brother Bear. It makes me cry every time.

4) Does Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs count? People tend to regard it in a negative light these days, and I think it's highly underrated despite it's historical significance. I ADORE the animation and I wish Disney would do more movies in that specific painterly style. Also I appreciate Snow White now more than I did as a child and I've interpreted her to be quite complex.

I totally agree! I actually think the eeriness of the motion capture perfectly fit the mood of the movie. It was supposed to be kind of unearthly and dreamlike, which is exactly how I remember the book (and most of what that author wrote) being. It's one of my favorite Christmas movies specifically because I love the combination of typically cheerful things (the musical numbers, the fact that they're gonna go see Santa) and slightly darker and more strange stuff (the ghost, the broken toys, the empty town square). It also came out about the time when I was reaching that 'Is Santa Clause actually real?' threshold, so there's some bittersweet nostalgia there as well.

I'm surprised you mentioned the King and I. I liked it equally as the 1956 original since I'm a sucker for happy endings. However, I don't blame the Rogers and Hammerstein organization for not wanting an animated film adaptation of one of their musicals again because of how different it was from the Broadway script.

High on my list of films in this category are: BROTHER BEAR, OLIVER & COMPANY, THE ROAD TO EL DORADO, and DINOSAUR; HOME ON THE RANGE also deserves a mention, because, flawed though it may be, it doesn't deserve the hate that it has received over the years.

(Special shout-out as well to THE KING AND I (1999), which I used to watch all the time as a kid...)

I haven't seen it in quite a while, but I do enjoy The Polar Express. I don't think the motion capture animation is as distracting as many claim, and the songs are memorable. It does have some flaws, such as the stretched out story and some irritating characters, but I think that this film is a good example of a picture book adaptation done right.
