I just recently watched this movie again. I was set-back by the gorgeous character animation and just how much I admired the story. The parts where danger approached felt real and very suspenseful which really made the movie special. I always knew the movie was more serious and dark but it's fascinating seeing something so different from the usual 3D movies today. To be honest I feel that 2D movies feel more real and emotional than 3D does. I had no idea that earlier script was darker, I mean how could you go more darker than this. Still Spirit makes me wish that we someday once more see a movie like this in the near future.

Fabulous review, Kajsa! Spirit is a film I've never seen, but it definitely sounds like it has some artistic merits, specifically the minimal dialogue and unflinching honesty in some of its portrayals.

I've only seen bits and pieces of this movie younger and even over the summer for my daycare job and it really doesn't capture my attention all THAT much
The animation and the atmosphere though for the most part is really stunning and worth admiring from an outsider POV :)

I'm glad it was so much more memorable for you. There's a significant fan base for this film that would likely disagree with my review as well. As a critic, sometimes it's a fine line between a critique and a personal opinion.
For me, it was not memorable, and that was noted as a flaw for me to critique.
But movies like Spirit, that feel fresh compared to some of the movies major studios are currently grinding out, need fans that love them and vouch for them; because a fan base means a reason for the studio to make these movies. It's likely a major reason DreamWorks created the Netflix series.
Again, I'm glad you love it - the film definitely deserves that love, despite any flaws I might critique myself.
