We’re stealing Disney tropes now. Kid wants X, but parents have a troubled family history with X, so they forbid X. Except King Triton lost his wife to humans, the shadowlands really were dangerous, the ocean killed King Tui’s friend, and so on. Here, it feels shallow, less compelling. Because there isn’t actually anything wrong with music! Coco’s family has nothing against music itself. They just think music brings a curse, they have something against curses. Sorry to be the negative Nancy, but still not feeling it. I will say the second half got me a little hyped, it had some gravitas and imagination.
