I knew a family who said this was their favorite movie. Dad, mom, 5 year-old and 13-year-old. They said they all cried a lot, but they all loved it. Kids can handle this movie. It’s extremely sad, but it’s the realities of life.

I feel like it’s deliberately ambiguous that way, and others. For instance, your interpretation is definitely legitimate, but you could argue that while Seita devotedly loved his sister, his pride ended up killing her. The movie doesn’t judge, but it’s left up to you if he is at least partially at fault for his actions.

Good review. This is definitely the hardest Miyazaki movie to watch and one of the most rewarding.
