Earlier this year, when I saw Finding Dory, I was doubtful about it, Zootopia and Kubo and the Two Strings fighting for the best animation Oscar. As Zootopia was a big critical and box-office success, I thought that it was going be the 'big bet' for Disney this year, and that Moana would only serve as a compensation for the lack of a classic past year (the same way as in 2015 Inside Out overshadowed The Good Dinosaur, or in 2002 when Lilo & Stitch recieved way more attention and acclaim than Treasure Planet).

But man, I was so, so wrong.

I entered the movie theater expecting to have a good time watching some Tangled-style adventure, but this time set on the Polinesyan islands. Probably it could be near Frozen or Wreck-it Ralph (wich I both love) quality-wise, I thought. I wasn't prepared for what I was about to see. It amazed me beyond words. There aren't enpugh adjectives that could help me describe what I feel for this film. It was incredible. Magical. Beautiful. Even if it was a bad movie or had a bad script, the animation itself is worth the ticket price in 3D, but that's just a minor achievement compared to the story and the emotional depth it carries. The 'I am Moana' and 'I know who you are' scenes are incredibly powerful, and nothing like we had been given before by Disney. I honestly think this is the greatest Disney film since The Lion King (something Frozen bragged of, but never really achieved). I even liked it more than The Little Mermaid, wich had been my favourite Disney film since I was 6, and I never actually thought another one in the future could be so good it would actually overcome my emotional attachment to Ariel. This one did.

I did think she looked surprisingly like Moana. I don't if that was by design to show how Moana was the chosen one or just by accident. It was kind of strange.

Did anyone else think that Te Fiti looked really strange at the end? I she could have really benefited from having a more realistic design rather than being in the same style as Moana

I finally got around to watching Moana, and I liked it a bit more than I thought I was going to like it. Seeing the culture and the political aspects of a tribe really interested me, and I am glad they did not make Moana rebellious. The first act is really strong, and carried so many emotions. My issue with the film started in the second half, because I thought it got kind of boring, and felt that Maui was weirdly executed at times. If they showed the tribe's reaction to Mona leaving in the middle of the ocean scenes, it would have been better paced. The animation is MORE than astounding, as there was so many textures and bold colors. My jaw dropped at times. I like what they did with the Mother Earth, and the ending seemed a bit rushed to me. Overall, I like it more than Big Hero 6, and Frozen, but prefer Wreck-it Ralph, Zootopia, and Tangled. It is the 4th best film of the year in my eyes.
