I don’t think it is lazy writing to adapt a book for a second time. I mean do we complain about the Jungle Book adapting a book for a second time? No. A.A. Milne wrote a book that they made 2 movies off of. No big deal.

The point is that they both have the same plot and thus adds up to lazy writing the second time around because they believe that no one will notice.

It just seemed like laziness on their part and could have been much better in my opinion.
